The Dallas Police Department released body camera footage of a chaotic scene after a police officer shot and killed a man in Downtown Dallas on Monday.
The video shows officers surrounding the man, who is later revealed to be 26-year-old Jason Varnado, after a reported disturbance at a bar on Main Street.
As officers try to subdue Varnado, he becomes increasingly agitated and resistant, prompting one officer to deploy a stun gun, which appears to have little effect.
Within a minute, an officer fires a single shot, striking Varnado in the chest. He dies a short time later at a hospital.
The video has sparked outrage and calls for greater accountability from the Dallas Police Department, which has faced criticism for its handling of similar incidents in the past.
“It’s a tragedy that we could have avoided,” said City Council member Tennell Atkins, who represents the area where the shooting occurred. “We need to do better in terms of de-escalation and crisis intervention.”
The shooting is under investigation by the Texas Rangers and the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office.
