Ilhan Omar is an American politician serving as the U.S. Representative for Minnesota's 5th congressional district.

Early Life and Education

Omar was born on October 8, 1981, in Mogadishu, Somalia. Her family fled to a refugee camp in Kenya when she was eight years old.

"I came here with nothing. I was a refugee, I was a immigrant, and I was a Muslim."

She moved to the United States with her family at the age of 12 and grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Education

Omar received a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from North Dakota State University in 2002.

Career

Omar was the first Somali-American to be elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2016.

"I stand in solidarity with the Palestinian Christina unconditionally for being an oppressed group of people by Israel."

She was sworn in as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives on January 3, 2019.
