Leaders of the DFL in Minnesota are responding to a call from Representative Mary Franson to hold a special session of the legislature to address the state's budget situation.
"We urge Representative Franson and her Republican colleagues to reconsider their decision to call a special session," said DFL Party Chair Ken Martin. "The people of Minnesota want their elected officials to focus on solving the real problems facing our state, like creating jobs and improving education, rather than playing politics."
The DFL leaders are also accusing the Republicans of playing politics with the state's budget, rather than working to find a solution.
"The Republican plan to hold a special session is nothing more than a political stunt," said Senator John Marty, a DFLer from Roseville. "It's an attempt to shift the blame for the state's budget problems onto the DFL and the governor, rather than taking responsibility for their own failures."
The DFL leaders are also pointing out that the state's budget situation is not unique to Minnesota, and that many other states are facing similar challenges.
"This is not a partisan issue, it's a statewide issue," said Representative Paul Thissen, a DFLer from Minneapolis. "We need to work together to find a solution, rather than playing politics and blaming each other."
