European regulators are taking steps to promote e-commerce growth in the region. The European Union's (EU) Digital Single Market (DSM) strategy aims to create a single digital market within the EU by 2020.
The DSM strategy includes initiatives such as the removal of roaming charges, the harmonization of copyright rules, and the improvement of e-commerce platforms.
"The Digital Single Market is a key priority for the European Commission," said European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society, Mariya Gabriel. "We need to create a level playing field for businesses and consumers, and to make it easier for them to do business online."
The European Commission has also launched a series of initiatives to promote e-commerce innovation, including the creation of a "digital innovation hub" to support startups and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the digital sector.
The hub will provide funding, mentorship, and networking opportunities to help digital startups and SMEs scale up and reach new markets. The initiative is part of the EU's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program.
Additionally, the European Commission has established a new "Digital Economy and Society" department to coordinate EU policy and initiatives in the digital economy.
"We need to create a digital economy that is inclusive, sustainable, and creates opportunities for all Europeans," said Mariya Gabriel.
